Abstract:

The purpose of this article is to take a clear look at the relationship between human thinking capacities and technology-based processes outsourcing mental tasks in our current life. This relationship is highlighted by comparing the development of thought and “thinking machine” side by side. From this comparison, one can differentiate between human and mechanical will-power and understand the apparent and real limitations of these powers respectively. The assumptions underlying the calculations of human or mechanical capacities are revealed, and a way to incorporate skill as a factor in any activity is shown. The intermediation of individual skill (Artisan) between the thinker (Philosopher) and the doer (Craftsman) is shown to be a vital necessity which is absent in mechanical processes. The effects of using technology on human thought and will-power show how mankind is in the process of sacrificing the latter capacities for the former, and by retracing the steps, a path is indicated where this need not happen. It is shown that on a road less taken one can incorporate a kind of thought process leading to a better development of technology in harmony with the human being.
